GOMA, DRC — The United Nations is warning of a worsening humanitarian disaster in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where rebel-controlled areas are spiraling deeper into crisis.
UN Humanitarian Chief Martin Griffiths, following a recent visit to the region, described the situation as “devastating” and called on the international community to act fast.
“Millions of civilians are suffering in silence. They need urgent help—especially women and children who are caught in the middle of a brutal conflict,” Griffiths said.
🚨 Key Facts:
- 7 million+ people displaced by ongoing conflict
- Over 3 million in desperate need of food, shelter, and medical aid
- Rebel attacks and insecurity blocking access to vulnerable communities
- Aid workers facing increasing threats, including abduction and violence
Griffiths emphasized that humanitarian agencies are struggling to reach those most in need due to roadblocks, insecurity, and the destruction of vital infrastructure.
🌍 A Global Responsibility
The UN is urging donor countries and world leaders to increase support and pressure warring parties to allow safe access for aid delivery.
“This crisis must not be ignored. The people of eastern Congo deserve peace, dignity, and international solidarity,” Griffiths added.
